Security audit of senior citizens by Delhi police

Inspectors of Delhi Police will start visiting senior citizens at their homes from next week for conducting a security audit of the elderly in the city to ensure their safety.
The drive will start from next Wednesday in all the 133 police stations of the city.
According to Delhi Police statistics, 31,744 senior citizens were found during a door-to-door survey of 5.05 lakh houses in the city. Out of this, only 8,397 have got themselves registered with the Senior Citizen Cell of Delhi Police.
"Ensuring the security of senior citizens who are living alone and are vulnerable is our foremost priority. We appeal to them to cooperate with us when police officers visit their residence," a senior police official said.
A nodal officer in the rank of an Inspector is being appointed in all the police stations and they will conduct security audit.
The nodal officer will visit the houses of senior citizens and will ensure that all such citizens have minimum security arrangements like door chains, iron grills and 'magic eyes' at doors of their houses, the official said.
Police will also ensure that the verification of employed are done besides ensuring that the elderly are not facing harassment from property agents, he said.
Police is also advising senior citizens to contact the area Station House Officer (SHO) if a personnel from the police station does not reach their house for the security audit.
"If you are a senior citizen living alone or with spouse, we advise you to register yourself with the Senior Citizen Cell," the official said. The Helpline number is 1291.
