Michigan man avoids jail time in neglect of mother
July 10, 2009
Muskegon County Circuit Judge Timothy Hicks suspended Mark Anderson's five-month jail sentence. Anderson will serve no jail time if he completes community service and mental health counseling.
The 51-year-old Muskegon man pleaded no contest to second-degree abuse of a vulnerable adult.
Authorities say Mark Anderson didn't bathe his mother in more than a year, and her skin started to deteriorate from acid made by her own waste.
Defense attorney Fred Lesica says Friday's sentence takes into account "the dysfunctional nature of the family" and pleas by relatives for leniency.
Lesica says Lucille Anderson is doing well.
