Nursing Home's Fate Uncertain (NSW. Australia)

Nursing Home’s fate uncertain

5/03/2009

The fate of the Nursing Home at the Murrumburrah-Harden District Hospital is uncertain following recent revelations that it is one of 11 Nursing Homes earmarked for transfer to the non-government sector. In last Novembers mini-budget, the Health Department said it would transfer 11 nursing homes, while maintaining continuity of care for residents. The transfers may or may not involve funds, depending on the organisations that apply, and the move is also designed to sell surplus land.

The aged care facility at the Murrumburrah-Harden District Hospital is amongst those earmarked for transfer. The Chief Executive of the Greater Southern Area Health Service Heather Gray, said that, plans for calling of Expressions of Interest are being finalised, with a view to advertising in the near future. “Greater Southern Area Health Service is very keen to ensure that the 20 aged care beds in Murrumburrah-Harden District Hospital remain in the township”, she added.

Last Friday a meeting was held with the family members of residents at the Nursing Home to inform them of the situation.

Many local residents have expressed their concerns that the essential community amenities which have attracted many new residents to Harden will be stripped away from those who invested their retirement funds in a commitment to living here in Harden. Many identify the Hospital and the Nursing Home as one of the town’s greatest assets.

The Harden Shire Council shares the concerns of the community regarding the proposed transfer of the 20 standard care nursing home beds and is keen to continue negotiations with the NSW State Government over the issue.

Council has also requested that the State Government reverse the proposal.

Council members have met with the NSW Premier, Nathan Rees, and a Policy Advisor representing the NSW Minister for health to voice their concerns and negotiate a way forward for our community.
