Shooting suspect 'tormented' elderly parents
The man arrested after a confrontation with Bakersfield Police Tuesday morning has a criminal conviction for tormenting his own elderly parents. He was identified as Hurbert John Slegers, 58, of Bakersfield.
Police said he drove his car toward an officer who was on foot. When the officer felt threatened, he fired three shots toward the oncoming car, police said. No one was injured, and Slegers was arrested a short time later.
Police said he'd be booked on a felony accusation of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.
He has four misdemeanor cases in Kern County.
Most recently, he pleaded no contest to elder abuse charges in September, 2007.
He berated and verbally abused his 84-year-old father to the point his 78-year-old mother feared the old man would not survive, according to Kern County Sheriff’s Department reports.
''For over 10 days, Slegers has been tormenting and causing unjustifiable mental suffering to his 84-year-old father and 78-year-old mother,'' the reports indicate.
''Slegers recently moved to his parents' residence and has said hateful comments which have caused great sadness and mental suffering to his mother and caused his father’s health to fail,'' the reports said.
'Slegers refused to move out of his parents' residence and his mother fears Slegers' mental abuse will kill Slegers' ailing father,'' the reports said.
He also pleaded no contest to two counts of resisting arrest in 2006 and, in a separate case that year, to reckless driving. He plead guilty to trespassing in 2004.

interviews will be booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of assault with a
deadly weapon on a peace officer and felony evading a peace officer.
