Watch Out - Elder Abusers Do Not Have Horns!
How does one identify Elder Abusers?
The short answer is, we cannot easily identify elder abusers.
Just like any other criminals (and, that is how I like to class them) they do not have “horns” on their heads, nor “evil-eyes”. In fact, they look so normal and act so very normal that friends and relatives of their victims tend NOT to believe that they can be capable of such heinous acts.
My Own Experience:
In the Frank Punito Case, where I witnessed the neglect, isolation and blatant disregard of the father, the abusers are well-educated. The daughter is a member of the Carers Network, and championing better care and services for the mentally ill. As a consultant psychologist she commands the respect and adorations of friends, colleagues and relatives.
The son of the victim is employed as a team leader for Customer Relations of a big company. No doubt, he also enjoyed the respect and adorations of friends, colleagues and relatives.
So what went wrong? Why did they do what they did?
How can two well-educated persons, not see the obvious; that what they did and did not do violates the basic human rights of their father.
The stress and bewilderment of the victim was so great that he almost died from the stress.
After over eight years, the victim was “rescued” from the abuses.
But what does that leave him?
This bitter, bewildered man no longer wants to see his children or grandchildren.
Can we blame him?
Now, the most amazing thing is that friends and relatives now expect the victim to carry on as though nothing ever happened. “Get back with your children and grandchildren.”
I even received an email asking me to “….give it a rest”.
So what about the abusers? They are considered “SQUEAKY CLEAN”?
Leave them alone?
What is more revolting to me and others, is that the abusers are strutting around still doing their jobs as great communicator and champion of the mentally-ill.
What is the father, the victim, reduced to?
No one dared to say anything about the abusers neglect, isolation and disregard of their father.
They have destroyed their father.
In the eyes of the abusers friends and relatives; they did nothing wrong. Just some very unfortunate events in their family dynamics.
And, the one who told the story is a liar and a cheat who has his/her own agenda.
How many elderly people out there who have not got someone willing to tell their story?
They are the “silenced majority” who are really in need of society’s assistance.
We failed them all.
Until we are outraged to the degree that we feel about child abuse, the elder abusers are going to continue to exploit the humanity in all of us.
“Let us not damage their careers. They have their own family to look after.”
There we go. So, what do we do to the victims?
Too bad, better luck next life?
Elder abusers must be stopped and exposed. There are more laws to protect abusers than laws to protect the elderly. This is a fact in many countries.
Speak out, if you are being abused. Seek assistance.
Let us not allow elder abusers make us out to be fools. Look at the evidence, if provided. Beware. These elder abusers thrive on our humanity when they showed none to their victims.
