Star Lake Woman Charged With Elder Abuse
May 3, 2012
A Star Lake woman has been charged with the alleged abuse and neglect of her elderly father.
St. Lawrence County sheriff deputies say 33 year old Mary McBroom allegedly abused and neglected her father, 94 year old Floyd McBroom.
After a home visit by the county's Adult Protective Services in late January and an evaluation by a local physician, the elder McBroom was taken to Clifton-Fine Hospital.
He was transferred to Upstate Medical University, where he was treated for three and a half weeks for the effects of the abuse and neglect.
Officials said he was suffering from 26 severe bed sores on his body.
Investigators said one of the sores was so deep that McBroom's artifical hip from a recent surgery could be seen.
"It definitely could have been prevented if she would have sought medical attention sooner. It would have all been avoided," said Detective Sergeant Tom Caringi of the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department.
Floyd McBroom was released from the hospital and moved in with another family member.
He died April 30, though police say his death was unrelated to the alleged abuse.
Mary McBroom was charged with endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person, a felony.
She will answer the charge later this month in Fine town court.
