Vigilence key to elder abuse prevention

It’s supposed to be the Golden Years. Instead, they are the dark years for many New Braunfels residents suffering at the hands of their caretakers — physically or financially.

Over the past five years, Daniel Perez, director of the Crisis Center of Comal County, has witnesses a disturbing trend.

Reports of abuse of the elderly have risen with each year.

He sees people in their 80s arriving at the Crisis Center’s shelter, looking for a place to recover from physical abuse or to piece their lives back together after financial ruin.

Until recently, abuse of the elderly often went unreported expect in extreme cases.

But abuse that takes place in the home from caregivers, be they the children of the elderly or privately hired help, has been reported more frequently as awareness of the issue becomes more mainstream, Perez said.

The Reynolds Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences has initiated a program to proactively address the abuse of our elders. The web site http://seniorfinancialhealth.net and its sister site http://seniorssupport.net is applying artificial intelligence technologies to address the issues of the elderly.

The SFHN development team is a multidisciplinary group of physicians, scientists, writers, educators, engineers and social workers working together to develop and provide resources and computer based tools to assist the elderly with independent living.

This is a nonprofit effort and people can help us with suggestions and references to resources for the elderly.

Prototypes and demonstrations can be accessed at http://seniorfinancialhealth.net and the the automated speech system can be accessed at (817) 439-6872
