No Excuses for Failure to Protect Elderly Tasmanians form Abuse and Neglect (TAS. AUSTRALIA)

Cassy O'Connor MP
19th October 2009

The Tasmanian Greens today called on the Bartlett government to join all the other Australian states in formulating and implementing an elder abuse strategy to protect vulnerable Tasmanians.
Greens Health and Human Services spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said it is simply shameful that Tasmania lags so far behind the rest of the nation when an estimated 3-4,000 elderly Tasmanians are experiencing the psychological, physical, emotional and financial effects of elder abuse.
“As the Greens have said many times in Parliament and in public debate, the Tasmania Labor government has its priorities all wrong.”
“Protecting vulnerable elderly Tasmanians from abuse and neglect would be a priority for any decent government.”

“Instead of wastefully sinking millions in public funding into the pulp mill, a race track upgrade, forest subsidies, a divisive loop road and spin doctors, the government should focus on the well-being of Tasmania’s people, particularly our most vulnerable.”
“Tasmanians, I am sure, would rather see their tax dollars invested in a well-researched and communicated framework for preventing elder abuse, along the lines of that presented by TasCOSS’ Our Island, Our Voices campaign.”
“Elder abuse is real. Real people are trapped in terrible cycles of abuse and neglect at a time in their lives when they should be enjoying a restful retirement.”

“Elder abuse prevention is long-standing policy in the UK, USA, WA, SA, Victoria, NSW, and Queensland. It’s time the Bartlett stopped making excuses and started showing it cares, for the 3-4,000 elderly Tasmanians suffering abuse and neglect, many in their own homes.” Ms O’Connor said.
