Group Seeks Nomination of 'Heroes' to Elders (OR. USA)

Gazette-Times
October 13, 2009

Know of someone whose courage or kindness kept an elder and adults with disabilities safe in Oregon? That person could be recognized for that service during a ceremony Nov. 19 in Salem.
Oregon Everyday Heroes, an advocacy organization, is asking for nominations of such individuals, who will be honored at a recognition ceremony. Nominations will be accepted through Oct. 19 and will be judged on the following criteria:

• The nominee performed the heroic act between September 2008 and September 2009.
• The nominee is a resident of or employed in the state of Oregon.
• If the heroic act is job-related, the nominee went above and beyond the normal scope of the job to keep elders safe or prevent abuse.

Individuals who know of someone who noticed unusual things that are consistent with possible abuse of elders or adults with disabilities and did something about it - whether by investigation on their own or by reporting it to professionals, are asked to submit a nomination for this person to be recognized as an Oregon Everyday Hero. Everyday Hero nominations can be submitted online at www.oregon.gov/DHS/spd/adv/gcss/heroes.shtml.
The Governor's Commission on Senior Services created the "Everyday Heroes" campaign in an effort to raise awareness of elder abuse, increase reporting, reduce tolerance of elder abuse and find ways of connecting individuals and families with community resources.
