Elder Abuse Prevention Month (TX. USA)

Elder abuse deemed everyone's business

05/07/2009

By Vincent T. Davis - Express-News

With May's designation as Elder Abuse Prevention Month, Adult Protective Services has scheduled public awareness seminars as part of its “It's Everyone's Business” campaign.

The campaign is a statewide effort to teach Texans about the problem of abuse, neglect and exploitation of seniors and adults with disabilities.

Regional director Jo Ann Tobias-Molina will host seminars to teach older San Antonio residents about increasing cases of elder fraud and how to protect themselves from financial exploitation.

The presentations will be held each Wednesday at nutrition sites across the city. The dates and locations are:

  • May 13, 10-11 a.m., Claude W. Black Center, 2805 E. Commerce St.
  • May 20, 10-11 a.m., Palm Heights Senior Citizens Nutrition Center, 1201 W. Malone.
  • May 27, 10 a.m.-noon, St. Jude's Catholic Church Nutrition Center, 130 S. St. Augustine Ave.

According to nationwide studies, 3 million to 5 million Americans 65 and older have been abused, with only one in five cases reported.

Texas APS, a division of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, has completed nearly 70,000 investigations of abuse, neglect or exploitation involving adults living at home; 48,000 incidents were confirmed, including cases of medical and physical neglect. Investigators found that family members, spouses, grandchildren or adult children were often the perpetrators.
