World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15, 2009. Throughout the world , abuse and neglect of older persons is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem. For every case of elder abuse and neglect that is reported to authorities, experts estimate that there may be as many as five cases that have not been reported.

Never ignore elder abuse. Similar to other types of violence, abuse of the elderly includes physical, sexual and psychological abuse as well as neglect. Elderly people are also vulnerable to economic abuse, in which others make improper use of their resources. Elderly people can be at risk for abuse in their own homes or in institutions.

Elder abuse is a complex problem. It often has roots in multiple factors. Family situations that can contribute to elder abuse include discord in the family created by the older person?s presence, a history and pattern of violent interactions within the family, or the stresses on family members who care for the older adult, and lack of knowledge of care giving skills.

Older adults need to be aware that elder abuse happens and that they have rights. Older adults must exercise their rights and advocate for themselves. Available resources and services need to be known to the older adults.

Suspected cases of elder abuse should be reported to your county Adult Protective Service Agency, law enforcement or an Abused Adult Crisis Line.
