People who abuse the elderly would be placed on a registry to prevent them from getting jobs caring for seniors under a bill that cleared a legislative panel Wednesday.
Sen. Julie Denton, R-Louisville, said she the registry could protect some of Kentucky's most vulnerable citizens from abuse at nursing homes and other facilities.
Already, people who are convicted of criminal abuse are flagged when applying for jobs. But Denton, the bill's sponsor and chairwoman of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee, said elder abuse often isn't prosecuted criminally.
"What you have are these individuals who are committing these acts against these adults, and because they don't get prosecuted, they can just go from job to job to job," Denton said.
The Health and Welfare Committee voted 7-3 to approve the measure, despite concerns among some lawmakers that innocent caretakers might erroneously end up on the register.
The legislation is Senate Bill 38.
