A 43-year-old Novato woman was arraigned on assault and elder abuse charges Tuesday on allegations she repeatedly beat her ailing mother in the home they share, authorities.
Despina Perivolaris, a crossing guard at Olive Elementary School, allegedly admitted to abusing the 76-year-old woman, even while knowing that she was being videotaped on surveillance cameras installed by her own sisters, police reported.
"You know ... it's hard to ... It was always hard to get my Mom to sit down at the table," Perivolaris told Novato police, according to a sworn affidavit by Detective Kory Jones. "I know it's no excuse, I know it's no excuse."
The frail-looking suspect, who is 4 feet 9 inches tall and 95 pounds, made a brief court appearance Tuesday afternoon, wearing a blue jail uniform and walking with a pronounced limp.
Perivolaris was charged with cruelty to a dependent or elder adult likely to result in great bodily injury or death, felony assault by means of force likely to cause great bodily injury or death, and personal infliction of great bodily injury to an elder, said prosecutor Tom Brown.
A public defender, Marta Osterloh, postponed entering a plea until another hearing on Wednesday.
Perivolaris is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.
