Financial scams top Tompkins elder abuse reports
Social services cites shortfalls in protective system

The most common calls to the Tompkins County Department of Social Services about suspected elder abuse are related to financial abuse.
Out of an average of eight to 10 calls a month, five or six relate to suspected financial abuse, said Liz Norton, supervisor of the adult protective unit in the Tompkins County Department of Social Services.
