Public Safety: Woman arrested again on charges of elder abuse
. January 17, 2009
FALLBROOK: The granddaughter of a Fallbrook woman found strangled in September was arrested yesterday, for the second time, on suspicion of elder financial abuse and other charges.
Amy Jo Mitchell, 33, was jailed after being questioned at the Fallbrook sheriff's station, said sheriff's Sgt. Roy Frank of the homicide unit.
Frank said the charges against Mitchell relate to the killing of Shirley Beggs, 74. Beggs' decomposing body was found in her Potter Street apartment on Sept. 4. The Medical Examiner's Office said she had been strangled.
Investigators identified Jeff Nolan, 38, a Fallbrook tow truck driver, as a suspect in the case. Nolan's body was found in his car on Sept. 9 in Riverside County, where he had committed suicide, the Riverside County Coroner's Office said. A San Diego County prosecutor said Nolan had confessed to Beggs' slaying before his death.
Mitchell was arrested within a week of Beggs' death on suspicion of theft from an elder, but she was released from jail pending further investigation. Frank said Mitchell was arrested about 4:30 p.m. yesterday on suspicion of elder financial abuse, burglary, being an accessory to a felony, making a false report to law enforcement and drug possession. –P.R.
