Perth dentist blows whistle on nursing home neglect, gets action
5th December 2008
A West Australian dentist has prompted an overhaul of the health and care given at nursing homes across the country after blowing the whistle on what he described as “appalling” levels of decay and month-old stagnant food found in the mouths of elderly nursing home patients.
Senior dentistry lecturer at the University of Western Australia Dr Clive Rogers said he was appalled when he began treating nursing home residents and found most were unable to keep up with their daily oral and dental maintenance.
“Anybody who sees those images can obviously conclude we need to do something and (Aging Minister) Justine Elliot will get the information.”
Dr Rogers said nurses and carers needed training and support to recognise dental problems and offer assistance.“I am very pleased an investigation has been called,” he said.
