PATNA: The city with the lowest number of elders dependent on anyone for their living, Patna has recorded maximum cases of physical abuse of elders in the country. A study on 'Elders' abuse and crime in India', conducted by an NGO, HelpAge India, shows that Patna tops in physical abuse of elders with 71% cases.
Sons, who are supposed to be the strongest support for their parents, are the ones who abuse the elder members of the family the most, says the report.
According to it, 71.4% of the abusers in Patna are sons. Nationally, 63.4% daughters-in-law indulge in physical abuse of the elderly.
Devki Devi, a widow living in Patna City, told TOI, "My son takes my entire pension and still ill-treats me. I don't want to stay with him, but I have nowhere to go."
