Police Officer Pleads Not Guilty to Grand Theft, Financial Elder Abuse (CA. USA)

A Salinas police sergeant pleaded not guilty this afternoon to felony charges of grand theft and financial elder abuse.
Sgt. Jay Malispina is accused of stealing more than $400 from his 70-year-old mother, Karolyn Malispina, between 2004 and 2008.
Salinas police Chief Louis Fetherolf said Malispina was placed on paid administrative leave a few months ago after the allegations surfaced. Fetherolf said the investigation, conducted by the department, concluded a week ago.
His lawyer, Juliet Peck of the Salinas-based law offices of Lawrence and Peck, said Malispina “absolutely denies any wrongdoing whatsoever.”
He is scheduled to return to court Feb. 3.
