MONTCLAIR –

It's never too old to learn - that was the message at Wednesday's "Crimes against Elders" workshop.

The free presentation drew almost 100 seniors to City Hall, where Nancy Cooper, a San Bernardino County deputy district attorney, discussed Penal Code Sec. 368, also known as the elder abuse section.
Topics ranged from neglect and financial abuse to scams and how to prevent them.
"I urge you to be very careful who you give (your financial) authority to because it can be easily manipulated," said Cooper, who works in the district attorney's Family Violence Unit.
Cooper defined neglect as someone not providing basic necessities to an elder, such as withholding food, clothes, utilities, medical care, hygiene and leaving them alone without care.
"One in five cases of elder abuse is reported," she said. "So you can imagine, those other four people are still being abused."

Seniors asked many questions and even shared how they have been taken advantage of.
