A former retirement center housekeeper who stole and forged checks totaling $2,100 from elderly residents is asking a McLennan County jury to spare him from prison.
Isidro Olvera, 33, pleaded guilty to three counts of forgery Monday and has elected to place his fate in the hands of a 54th State District Court jury of six women and six men.
“It is our position that when you take advantage of three elderly people in a nursing home by stealing and forging their checks that you deserve prison time,” prosecutor Beth Toben told jurors in opening statements. “He may have had permission to clean their rooms, but he did not have permission to clean out their bank accounts.”
Olvera, a former housekeeper at St. Elizabeth’s Place, admitted that he stole four checks from three different retirement center residents, ages 92, 88 and 85, filled in amounts ranging from $450 to $650, forged their signatures and then cashed them at banks.
His photo was captured cashing one of the checks by at least one bank security camera, Toben told the jury.
