Non-profit groups assisting seniors could benefit from an infusion of federal cash.
But first, those groups must apply, and the deadline is fast approaching.In fact, the federal government late last week sent out a reminder that the deadline to apply for the New Horizons for Seniors program is Friday.
The program provides cash for non-profit organizations that help seniors in three areas:
* Up to $25,000 for community participation and leadership projects, to encourage seniors to continue to play an important role in their communities by helping others in need;
* Capital assistance funding of up to $25,000 to upgrade facilities or equipment used in seniors programs and activities.
* Elder abuse awareness funding, up to $250,000 per project per year, to educate the public about abuse of seniors. Education and awareness resources are to be available.
"We know how important it is to provide meaningful programs and activities for our seniors. This is just one more way that we can help support non-profit organizations in their goal to engage seniors in our community," said Joe Preston, Conservative MP for Elgin-Middlesex-London.
Why were reminders sent out so close to the deadline?
"We just want to remind them. We recognize the non-profits and having spent a lot of time in not-for-profits before this job, things get put aside until they're overly urgent, then there's a rush to fill them out and get them in," Preston said.
Locally, a handful of projects have benefited from New Horizons funding over the years, including the St. Thomas Seniors Centre which received $22,900 for a seniors healthy eating and activity program.
