A shocking report has revealed that there has been a massive increase in the number of cases reported to North Somerset Council over the past year.
Physical abuse was the most commonly alleged type of abuse, followed by neglect.
A total of 48 per cent of reported cases were said to have happened in the 'victim's' own home and 42 per cent in a care home, which represents a significant increase on the previous year's figure.
The annual report, presented at a North Somerset Council meeting by director of adults social services Jane Smith, describes how the number of referrals to the council rose by 60 per cent in 2008/09 compared to 2007/08.
