Police Charge Son With Father’s Murder (NEW ZEALANDER)

By Michael Fox - Stuff

29 June, 2010
Police have charged a Tauranga man with the murder of his father after he allegedly bashed the 76-year-old in his own home.

David Tait sustained serious head injuries in the attack last Tuesday and died the next day in Tauranga Hospital.

He was discovered by police who broke into his home after fielding a call from a concerned family member.

His son, Murray Tait, 45, appeared in Tauranga District Court on June 23 on a charge of assaulting his father after being pulled from Tauranga Harbour by police in a coastguard rescue boat.

Tait was today formally charged with murder and will reappear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow.

Detective Senior Sergeant Lindsay Pilbrow said the police inquiry was continuing.

They wanted to speak to anyone who saw Murray Tait, or his dark blue Subaru Legacy station wagon with the licence plate BTT823 on the day of the attack.

"In particular, we are urgently seeking any information that may help us find the clothes that Murray Tait was wearing."

Police suspected the clothes were disposed of somewhere in the Papamoa Beach area.

"If any member of the public has found any clothing in those areas since Tuesday, we would urgently like to talk to them," he said.

The clothing is described as a dark-coloured, sleeveless fleece vest, a pair of grey shorts and a pair of dark grey or black rubber jandals.

Police were also keen to speak with people who had seen the car on Papamoa Beach Rd or around that area in Papamoa between 10:15am and 2:30pm that day.

Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 or contact a member of the investigation team on 07 577 4300 or 0800 SPEAKUP
