Nursing Home: Man Jailed for Murders (UK)

Man jailed for care home murders
Jul 31 2008

A 20-year-old man who admitted murdering two women as they lay in their beds at a nursing home was sentenced to life in prison and told he would serve a minimum of 24 years and three months.

Nathan Mann, formerly of Avonside Drive, Leicester, pleaded guilty earlier this month to the murders of Rashmi Badiani, 56, and Radhaben Chauhan, 72, at Hayes Park nursing home in the city last year.

Sentencing him at Nottingham Crown Court, Mr Justice McCombe said: "A double murder is particularly serious and is all the more so when perpetrated on defenceless and incapacitated ladies in the middle of the night, in what was in effect their home.
"I must add to that the gruesome injuries inflicted, going far and away beyond anything required to make your escape when detected as an intruder."

Mann climbed into the ground-floor room his two victims shared via an unlocked window and committed an "unprovoked and cowardly" attack on two disabled women, said police.
He rained blows on Mrs Badiana, leaving her with horrific facial injuries, including a fractured nose and cheekbone, the court heard.

He ripped out Mrs Chauhan's catheter and suffocated her.
And the undergarments of both women were tampered with before Mann used a chair to barricade the door to their room and made his escape. The killer has refused to admit his involvement in any "sexual conduct" with his victims, claiming he has no recollection of it happening.

"On any footing this was a frenzied attack on two victims who could hardly have been more vulnerable," said Mr Justice McCombe
