Gastro kills one Bangalor Retreat nursing home, Tweed Heads
ONE resident has died and another 44 have fallen ill following a gastro outbreak at a five-star nursing home retreat on the far north NSW coast.
The Bangalor Retreat nursing home, at Tweed Heads West, is now in lockdown.
"The Department of Health and Ageing is closely monitoring the situation at Bangalor Retreat to ensure that all appropriate actions are being taken,'' federal Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot said in a statement today.
Thirteen staff at the nursing home have also been affected.
The 101-bed facility includes a movie cinema, library, hairdresser and several dining areas.
A spokesperson from the nursing home was not available for comment on Wednesday night.
In 2007 there was 1,879 outbreaks of gastroenteritis across Australia, affecting 37,474 people.
Sixty per cent of the outbreaks occurred in nursing homes, Ms Elliot said.
