TWO aged care nurses have been charged and stood down over the alleged maltreatment of patients at a nursing home on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait.
The nurses have been charged with serious assault and are scheduled to appear in court on November 11. The Courier-Mail understands the charges relate to serious allegations of patient mistreatment at the Star of the Sea nursing home. The independent Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency is conducting a full review audit of nursing home, said a Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot. "The Department of Health and Ageing is taking the matter seriously,'' she said. "We recognise that it is a very remote facility accessible by sea and plane only, but resident care must always come first," Mrs Elliot said.
