A former Hillsborough woman is in jail for forging her grandmother's checks to buy cocaine.

Samantha Arsenault, 21, pleaded guilty in Hillsborough County Superior Court in Manchester to felony forgery and misdemeanor theft. She was sentenced to two years in the Hillsborough County House of Corrections with all but 45 days suspended for two years.

In 2006, Arsenault's grandmother reported that her granddaughter had stolen one of her checks, forged her signature on it and then gave it to a third party, whom Arsenault owed money, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office.

Arsenault later admitted she stole the check and forged the signature to repay a debt to a person who regularly supplied her with cocaine, prosecutors said.

In addition to the jail sentence, Arsenault was sentenced to serve one to three years in state prison, but that sentence was suspended provided she remains on good behavior and completes a substance abuse program.

"My office will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute perpetrators responsible for committing crimes against the elderly," Attorney General Kelly Ayotte said. "Crimes like this are reprehensible, because they constitute a betrayal of trust by those closest to the victim."

The Attorney General's Elder Abuse and Financial Exploitation Unit, a specialized unit that was created in 2004 to prosecute cases of elder abuse, neglect and financial exploitation, prosecuted the state's case against Arsenault.
